The choice of the fitting construction

If you are on the market for a new tent, certain questions will come up:

Do I want a tunnel or geodesic tent (the dome tent is the simple type of geodesic tent)?

Should the pole sleeves be on the inner tent or the fly?

There seldom is a simple answer. Decisive is how the tent will most often be used. In general, tunnel tents have the poles on the fly, while the poles on geodesic tents are usually connected to the inner tent. The exception is the rule, however, e.g. on the “Forum” model. In the following, the pros and cons of the two construction types will be explained. This of course is a simple comparison of two standard contructions. Nowadays there are also a mixture of these two methods but the questions is always, if it  will benefit from these mixed hybrid styles or not.

The more "all purpose" the tent is, the less you will have the best construction in specific uses. It is a bit like using a street bicycle or a mountain bike. Sure you can use it off or on road but each style has its best performance when used like intended.

There are more things to consider e.g.  how and where you are travelling but this shows the most common ad- and disadvanages. if you are not sure and you would need more info please contact your dealer or us directly.

Geodesic contruction

Advantages:
Higher storm stability
Almost free standing
Can be moved or turned while errected
Roomier inner tent through dome shaped inner tent

Disadvantages:
Mostly higher weight compared to floorsize of tunnel shape
Smaller vestibule
Inner tent not always protected against rain when vestibule doors are open

Tunnel (or: hoop) tents

Plus:
  Better weight – room ratio
  Mostly larger vestibule
Inner tent mostly protected against rain when
     vestibule door is open

Minus:
Must be staked out to set up
Needs more stake out guy lines if stormy
Noisier in strong winds because fabrics do
     flutter

Result

Each area of use has its own “optimal” tent. In general you can say if you are concerned about each gram, the best tent for the rain protection is the tunnel tent. In mountainous regions, in high-wind or hot areas, the geodesic tent will be better suited. That does not mean, however, that you cannot use a tunnel tent where a geodesic might be preferable, or the other way around
